Gender and Sports

I'm taking a class this semester called "Gender and Sports"- ok, actually I'm auditing it because Dr. Finch, my advisor, is teaching it and, plus, it will be a good thing to show up on my transcripts. Part of the class is that we have been assigned to just pay attention to the world around us a little bit more and see what interesting "tidbits" we can find that deal with gender and sports. I've never really been an advocate of having cheerleading as a sport, although I do recognize that cheerleaders are athletes. Below is a commercial I saw on tv the other day. Take a look.

I love it because of how much it means to the little girl that her dad would help her practice her cheerleading. I love it because it defies so many "macho man" attitudes that prevail in today's world. I love it because it shows the tender spot this man must have for his daughter. And I love it because it reminds me of my dad in some ways, with so many daughters, going to ballet recitals, the Nutcracker ballet performance, playing sports with me, and just supporting each of his children no matter what we choose to do. Thank goodness for the tender hearts of fathers all over the world.

Even the soft hearted dads who help their soft hearted boys. (Not girly, mind you...just soft hearted.) :)

Aubrey I love it! I was laughing and had to show Jared...I think he's in for a little dose of girly-ness when our baby arrives in 2 weeks! It'll be so fun to watch. Thanks for sharing!
